DIGGINGNEWS
The Summer IS here (well, as good as it gets in the UK) and it’s time to get yer forks out and have a forage! Here’s a few random pics to get yer goin’’ - next issue we hope to bring an extended ‘Diggin’’ News’ section... in the meantime - get yer forks out!
Scunthorpe’s Rob Peterson is a
regular with his pipe smoking,
bobble hat wearing, trust dad
alongside (still actively digging). He sends
me many images of them digging, everything “hard graft” but ALL still exciting to them - what will come out next?
Bottle diggers don’t need to pay gym memberships! Above is Rochdales very own Francis Romanowski going hell for leather with his trusty spade. Persistence, generally, pays off - in this instance an unusual, scarce, ‘Fry’s/ Cocoa’ enamel sign. Carefully cleaned even considerably damaged examples can bring “just rewards!”
Some sites lend themselves only to machine excavation which needs careful planning, and
can be costly. There’s a good number of well practised/ experienced folk (see advert inside this magazine) who can take on such a challenge -
most often imposed by a very limited time schedule to “dig out completely.” Right John Goulding and ‘mates.’
BBR is beginning to get more contacts from overseas since the new website was
launched - above L is an image from Sjr Harman a digger in India - shown here poking out of the earth is a miniature Taddy snuff jar. We reckon given the rise and rise of the digging over there it is only a matter of time before some incredible rarities ‘pop’ out!
Teakettle inks
Above right Norfolks very own “glowing” with a Barretts Mandrake find!
Bit of a visual teaser here - a very large presentation (in America) of teakettle inks by Don Carroll & Lynn Mitchell. Just short of 200 in total - an amazing array, representing many, many years of chasing, for sure. BBR has taken a consignment of over 300 inks recently, including a goodly number of teakettle inks, plus there’s a smattering in the Norman Lewis Collection, and also several from Alan Blakemans’ collection - stay alert for a ‘bevy’ shortly!!

Young Andys’ smile tells it all - the thrill of the chase... digging up a rare blue lipped Chesterfield g.b. Look out for him at any Elsecar Show fer a chat.
Keep the hobby going - fill your holes in
(& use groundsheets where necessary)
