 217. DR TAYLORS WASHING LIQUOR BOTTLE. 8.7ins tall. Very dark brown, near black glass. Oval base section, curved front and rounded shoulders, short squat neck, rear slivver just below the shapely double collar lip (possibly done when opening with a sharp object/). Lip is quite crude, hand finished. Two vertically embossed lines of chunky serif embossed letters. Smoothed base pontil. See article in BBR 167, due out in April. This bottle was dug by Steve Narraway in the fabled Reigate Caves. Rear lip flaw as

  Dr TAYLOR’S WASHING LIQUID
Extensive and very extravagant adverts for Dr Taylor’s washing Liquid appear in newspapers of 1849/50 - the Ciilet Bang of its day,
repelling vermin and
 cleaning wood, paint and every description of house-cleaning at a “great saving of soap, time and labour.” It was made by James Taylor & co at the London Vinegar Works in Long Lane served in bottles at four or eight pence sizes. James was
also patentee of a railway valve in 1846. With a double collar lip, chunky serif embossing for ‘Dr TAYLOR’S / WASHING LIQUID’ in olive green glass
it will set you back a good deal more today.
