HIGH RATES OF IRON-BASED HERBICIDE
Properties affected by a pesticide ban or under reduced herbicide frameworks rely on low-risk herbicides to manage weeds. This study compared three rates of liquid, soluble granular, and dry formulations of the iron-based herbicide, Fiesta (iron chelate) to assess the impacts on turfgrass quality of a tall fescue/ Kentucky bluegrass rough. The
cultivars are more resistant to snow mould damage than others.
products were applied four times, 3–4 weeks apart. This study was intended to assess if over-application of the product would affect long- term turf health and density.
A slight decrease in turf quality was observed with all the Fiesta treatments one week after each application and the higher rates resulted in more damage. The treated turf exhibited a dark-green colour with some patches of dead, brown leaves. Note that uniform application is extremelyimportantforthegranular formulation! Within two weeks after treatment, the turf was able to out- grow any damage and was deep green in colour due to iron uptake.
Existing black medic weed populations were eradicated by all Fiesta treatments by the end of the
study. Three weeks after the fourth application, all treated plots had fully recovered and were deep green in colour. This project was sponsored by Neudorff North America.
PRE- AND POST-EMERGENT MANAGEMENT OF CRABGRASS Smooth crabgrass and large crabgrass are common in areas that are thin, patchy, or newly seeded. A stand of Kentucky bluegrass was treatedwithRoundup, rototilled, and thenseededwithbothcrabgrass species. Fiesta was applied as a liquid, granular, or soluble granular prior to crabgrass germination or at the 2-leaf growth stage. Visual ratings were taken weekly for two months.
Most of the treatments showed some initial large crabgrass
