suppression in the first 4 weeks, similar to chemical control with Dithiopyr, but that suppression was less noticeable by the end of the 8th week. All of the Fiesta treatments decreased smooth crabgrass populations for the duration of the experiment. In addition, this study suggested that Fiesta had very good activity on young broadleaf plantain plants. This project was sponsored by Neudorff North America.
NATIONAL TURFGRASS EVALUATION PROGRAM (NTEP) TALL FESCUE
The GTI has previously submitted data for the 2020 and 2021 NTEP Tall Fescue reports, which are available online. Of the 132 turf-type tall fescue cultivars, a few stood out as contenders for use in southern Ontario. The cultivars DLFPS-321/3708, Firecracker and Teacher exhibited the least amount of snow mould damage. The highest average quality ratings (evaluated monthly from April-November) were documented for PPG-TF 231, PPG-TF 267, BY-TF-169, and Teacher, where were among the 96 cultivars “statistically tied” for first place in overall performance.
Information from NTEP is used by individuals, plant breeders, and turfgrass researchers to identify improved environmentally sound turfgrass species and cultivars. Selecting newer, more resilient turfgrass cultivars is a suggested practice for integrated pest management. Consult a professional agronomist or refer to the NTEP website (www.NTEP.org) and select a trial that is similar to your specific climate.
