environment. Hosting staff events such as a round of golf, a barbecue, or a lawn bowling tournament keeps his team engaged and united.
“I have always been a very hands- on Superintendent, being out on the course most of the day with the staff, helping train is part of my normal day,” says Dustin. Going out and getting to know the staff as people, and not just a body, lends to his staff buying in to the work. Good, effective communication with ALL members of the Turf Department Team is an exceptional way to emphasize the importance of a cohesive team.
Dustin will be leaned upon for his leadership skills as the president of the CGSA. When asked if he had any plans for the coming year, he replied, “Lately, the Board and staff have focused on labour solutions and that is a top priority. I always feel raising
the profile of our profession is of the utmost importance and we will continue the many initiatives on that front. Most importantly, making sure the members are engaged with the CGSA. We are looking at some additions to the CGSA calendar that I think will help us do that in the very near future.”
When asked what advice he would give to his younger self, Zdan says, “Never be afraid to step outside your comfort zone or take a leap for a career move.” Dustin also added, “Honestly, I have no regrets and my journey in this industry has been just that.”
Dustin would be remiss to leave out the people that he loves. “Just like we are only as good as our turf team in front of us, all I have done both on the turf side and association side are not possible without great
support at home. Thanks to my parents who instilled a great work ethic and have always been supportive. My wife Kara has been there through every step of this journey from Whitehorse to Medicine Hat, and now Edmonton. Our girls, Erin, Holly, and Delainey have all worked at the golf course and looking back, it is so special to be able to work with your kids. This industry has provided for my family for many years, and I am thankful for that.”
When asked what he would tell someone who is thinking about entering the industry, he replied, “There is no better office than an eighteen-hole golf course, where you get to see the sunrise each and every day. There will be trying times, as with any job, but the turf industry is like no industry out there and will be rewarding in the end.” GM
