ENHANCING VEGETATION AND WILDFLIFE
The golf course is surrounded by wooded area where wildlife is abundant. We have installed nest boxes to try and increase the tree swallow population. This has proven to be an enormous success. We currently have one beehive on the property as well. We plan to install two more beehives this upcoming season.
Our plan is to offer honey to our members and have the product incorporated in a few meals on our menu. We are also happy to help with the bee population in our area. Bees are the most important pollinators and if we can help them by providing the best environment for them to live, then we will all gain from these actions. We are lucky enough to have the chef’s wife who is an experienced beekeeper come in on a regular basis to take care of the beehive and maintain a proper environment for the bees.
The chef also has access to a garden with a variety of herbs and tomatoes. Our members enjoy having meals prepared with ingredients that have been grown on site and this adds
to the experience of being a member here. We have also designated certain naturalization areas that not only attract certain wildlife but also help cut down on maintenance costs without affecting play.
Another example of what we have been able to implement is we now have areas with milkweed among other plants and flowers to attract monarch butterflies and have seen a major increase in sightings on the property. Having seen a decline in monarchs’ population in the last few years, we are happy to contribute to the wellbeing and increase of monarchs in our area.
Another major part is water. The water in our ponds on the property is evaluated on a regular basis and we aim to have the best quality water not only for irrigation but also for life in and around the area. A nice clean and clear pond also adds to the beauty of a golf course. This is something that the course has always been careful with. The quality of water on the property has been held to very high standards throughout the years.
