for irrigation which allows us an even better control over irrigation. Healthier plants allow us to give our members high quality playing surfaces.
WELL WORTH IT
Our members are also incredibly happy that their club is certified Audubon. Caring about our impact on the environment, even if it is a small gesture like planting milkweed on a course, is a source of pride for all involved. Members stop us and ask questions about any improvements made, take pictures of certain areas, and take time to show their guests all the improvements we completed in and around the course.
We will install a plaque outside of the clubhouse, near our practice green, stating the property’s achievements in environmental sustainability. Signs are also posted on the property indicating our designated areas and short descriptions of why those areas are important.
Getting this certification does involve some extra work but as I mentioned earlier, some of you might be close to attaining it without knowing it. It is also worth mentioning that people who live in the community where we are located also benefit from our hard work. Having an outreach program is also part of the Audubon process.
One example is having local schools help in building nest boxes for the property. Sending out a press release is also an effective way of getting the message out to the local community that the golf course they live next to has the environment at heart.
Our challenge now is to keep up the work that has been done and maintain our status as a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program golf course. We found that it was a project worth our time and effort. There have been some financial investments that needed to be made. For us, it was the upgraded closed loop washing station. However, when you consider the benefits in the long run, it is well worth the investments. We hope to continue on this path and hope that others might consider going in the same direction. GM
