 Non-Amazing, Need Not Apply

Non-amazing people need not apply! At Copetown Woods, traditional recruiting methods, such as job fairs and resume submissions, are so pre-COVID! While we aim to minimize employee turnover, it is inevitable for positions that are largely held by students.
We knew that many of the positions we were hiring for would have applicants that would have little to no experience. For many, it’s their first job. So why ask for a resume filled with exaggerated experience that doesn’t pertain to what we’re looking for? We knew that if we found the right people, we could train them to become great in their role.
Here are a few examples of experiences listed on resumes we receive: Babysitting my neighbours, Working at the booth at the arena, Helped coach my brother’s t-ball team...and throw in the resume staples: Possess superior communication skills, Proficient in MS Office, Fast Learner...you get the idea!
Rather than a document full of lies and overstated skills everyone else has, we opted for a 30 second elevator pitch video. We asked potential team members to send us a selfie video ... or a cinematic masterpiece. We asked them to tell us about themselves, how they could take our guest experience to another level, and how they would enhance our overall team.
The outcome was unbelievable. We received 53 video submissions for positions in all departments, by people ranging in age from 14 - 76 years old. The videos allowed their personalities to come out, provided a chance for their creativity to shine and it allowed us to understand who they are as a person as opposed to what we could read on a piece of paper.
We were able to hire a team of outgoing and creative individuals. It proved that someone with no experience could become a top performer. Our new team members made us better. They made our team better. And they made the experience better for every guest they interacted with!
