Physical and chemical properties

1-Physical properties: -

- It is the properties that can be sensed (observed using senses).
- We use words like: smooth, rough, red, round, sweet to describe them.
• Color
• Shape
• Odor
• Texture

2- Chemical properties: -

- It is the properties that you can observe its effect (change) on materials.
- They appear when materials interact with other material.

► Ability to burn e.g Burning of paper: - (rapid reaction with
oxygen)
ash is produced.

►Ability to rust e.g Rusting: - (slow reaction with oxygen in
presence of water)

When iron nail reacts with air and water, it forms rust layer.

An important feature of chemical properties is that they are only
measurable by changing materials

For example:- a chemical property of a paper is that it is flammable.
