One of the most memorable vacations of my life was our trip to Belize and I would love, love, love to
go back on your new trip to Yucatan.
Anne Crane, San Diego, CA, Coral Jaguar

Belize and Yucatan Mayan ruins caves and cenotes

Throughout Belize and southern Mexico, the Mayan civilization thrived for thousands of years beginning

around 2000 B.C. through to 1500 A.D. We visit ancient cities and ceremonial centers that illuminate a
period of history which encompasses the early formative years of Mayan Civilization through to initial
European contact and colonization. It is thought that this region around A.D. 250 was one of the most
densely populated and culturally dynamic societies in the world.

We travel by road, by boat and jungle trails to reach the most interesting ruins in the area. We explore
ruins in Belize such as Altun Ha, Xunantunich and Lamanai on the New River; Kinichna, Kohunlich and
crystal clear cenotes in the Yucatan. Many sites are off the beaten track and are situated in beautiful

tropical forests with their own unique features to add special interest. With your guides, you’ll learn not
only of the archaeology of the ruins, you’ll also learn of the surrounding rainforest; the birds, plants,
wildlife and local lore that provide insights into how the Maya might have lived thousands of years ago.
By boat, we’ll explore the waterways of the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary where we can see many birds

including northern jacanas, white ibis, wood storks and the huge jabiru stork.
We’ll outfit you with helmets and cave lights then specially-licensed cave guides will take you on an
adventure where you hike through the rainforest and cross rivers to reach hidden cave entrances. Through
underground passages you’ll be led into stunningly beautiful ceremonial chambers littered with pottery,

stone tools and sacred alters where calcified skeletons still remain - a reminder of ritualized sacrifices to
the gods which took place thousands of years ago. At night we stay in comfortable lodges, enjoying great
food, the warm hospitality of our hosts and the interesting company of friends and travellers.
