CHAPTER CHATTER, EAA Chapter 78 7
A page from Cornelia Fort's pilot's logbook with
her remarks for December 7, 1941 This Lego Aircraft Carrier Is So
Massive, You Will Be Amazed!
It reads: "Flight interrupted by Japanese attack on
Pearl Harbor. An enemy plane shot at my plane &
missed & proceeded to strafe John Rodgers, a civilian
airport. Another plane machine gunned the ground in
front of me as I taxied back to the hangar."
Cornelia Clark Fort (February 5, 1919 – March 21,
1943) was a US aviator who became famous for two
aviation related events. While conducting a civilian
training flight at Pearl Harbor, she was the first US pilot
to encounter the Japanese air fleet during the Attack
on Pearl Harbor, and narrowly escaped a strafing
attack after landing. The next year, Fort became the
second member of what became the Women Airforce
Service Pilots, and was working as a ferry pilot when
she became the first female pilot in American history to
die on active duty. Artist Ed Diment has assembled an amazing 22-foot-
long, 550 pound model USS Intrepid out of LEGO®
bricks. The model USS Intrepid was crafted out of
250,000 LEGO® bricks, and is nearly 4.5 feet high
and 4.5 feet wide. Diment resides in Portsmouth,
England, where he originally built the model after
visiting the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum while
vacationing in New York.
