Wrap the working end around the object a second
time and underneath the crossed-over section of
the first turn. Tighten by pulling simultaneously
on the working end and standing end, taking care
to keep the distinctive shape of the knot.
Clove Hitch on a Stake
A VARIATION OF THE CLOVE HITCH USED FOR TYING A
ROPE TO A STAKE
This method of tying a clove hitch requires two hands but
allows the rope to be dropped quickly over a stake or post
instead of tying the knot around the object. As a bonus, it
can be tied at any point in a rope—such as in the middle of
50 meters of cord. An ancient knot, the clove hitch is at
least 10,000 years old (see Introduction). When a quick
hitch is needed, climbers and boaters as well as campers
use this knot.
