Dear fellow adventurer:
Whether you’re about to embark on your first outdoor
experience or your twentieth; whether you’re nervous or
excited; whether you’ll be backpacking, rock climbing,
whitewater rafting, or sailing—no matter the recreation type
— we believe the outdoors is the best classroom.
That’s because we learn best through experience,
challenge, adventure, and, most important, by being in a
community of fellow compassionate people who will support
us in these efforts. In the outdoors, we find common ground,
a place to meet both physically and mentally. We strive
together to meet a goal that seems out of reach on our own,
but achievable when we work side by side, and through this
experience, we see our true selves.
It’s this power of community, of taking risks, of being
uncomfortable, of saying “no” to mediocrity, of finding
refuge from self-imposed limitations, that are our real
reasons for adventure. These are the reasons why we’ll
wake up before dawn to canoe with the sunrise, why we’ll
backtrack four miles on tired feet after taking a wrong turn
and sing the theme song to Mission Impossible to get
through it, why we’ll fight to stay awake just to stare at the
stars in a deep black sky a little longer.
We hope this field guide will lead, motivate, and inspire
you to learn new skills and master old ones, to challenge
yourself and discover new passions, to strengthen your
community, to uncover your deepest strengths, and to
