This year, the Trustees gave the Ruth Tomlinson Memorial Award of £1,000
to a student at the Lucy Cavendish College in Cambridge. The details of
this Award can be read in the Lucy Cavendish College report.
The Fund was established in 1977, from donations that had been received
in Ruth Tomlinson’s memory, and was administered by two Trustees: Stella
                               Rule and Margaret Archibald.
Today, the Fund is administered by four Trustees: Hilarie Tucknott, Sue
Brown, Nora Gleave and Ann Wiseall, who is also the liaison Trustee with the Lucy Cavendish
         College in Cambridge.

The purpose of the fund being:
To provide relief for persons who are suffering from a physical or mental disability of whatev-
er nature and however caused to enable them to fulfil their potential through grants of mon-
ey for the provision of such specialist educational or therapeutic materials, equipment, devic-
es or other aids or services to widen the range of educational and cultural opportunities and
activities open to them and to improve their ability to participate in society for public benefit
         in a socially inclusive way.”

Throughout the year the Trustees have received several enquiries for awards from organisa-
tions and three enquiries from individuals. Unfortunately we were unable to grant awards to
the organisations as they were applying on behalf of their organisation and not for a named in-
         dividual.

We were, though, delighted to award grants to two people who were wishing to renew their
talking microwaves, which no longer suited their needs.

After receiving the award the mother of one of the awardees wrote:

“E would like to thank you so very (much) for her microwave (that) you funded for her. This
helps her so much, to (be able to) work on her independence, as it's very limited, but she's al-
ways loved her talking microwave, she was upset when her old one stopped working, and so
very happy when we told her she was getting a new one. She has already started to try and
         learn how to use it.”

We were also delighted to help a mother, with young children, to assist with a much needed
         upgrade to her wheelchair. Upon receiving the award the recipient wrote;

“I would like to thank you so much. I won’t have to rely on my mum so much……….. I can now
collect my middle son from school and take my youngest to his new playgroup. With the spe-
cial cushion my back will be less painful.”

         The Trustees would welcome enquiries.
Application is simple: write or email the Chair of the Fund along with the reason for applying
for a grant and the amount requested. ▪

         Hilarie Tucknott, Chair RTMF
