Retirement allowed David and Mara to pursue one of their passions,
doing volunteer work in East Africa. Through the auspices of FIENS
(Foundation for International Education in Neurological Surgery), David
returned to the operating room, treating patients and teaching neurosur-
gery in Kenya, Ethiopia and Tanzania throughout the mid-2010s. His
last operation in Tanzania was the successful clipping of an ACom An-
eurysm. During this time, Mara did important nursing work with AIDS
patients in Kenya and teaching in Ethiopia and Tanzania.
David has been an active member of the WNS since 1997. He has tak-
en on many roles within the WNS but most significantly as Chair of the
Site Selection Committee, having researched and negotiated the most
exquisite sites for our meetings. He continues to enjoy interacting with
students and residents at UW, and delights at seeing his children near-
ing retirement age, four grand kids in mid to late 20s, while all along
have a wonderful love affair with his wife, Mara.
