This amazing lady did all this, leading an organisation as Sue Holtom recalls,
pre computers and mobile phones. In addition there was her busy local profile in
Cornwall. She served in the British Red Cross for 36 years, her final post being
divisional director. Stella was particularly interested in deaf children and was Chair-
man of the Cornwall Deaf Children’s Society. Well known in the county, she often
held meetings, preaching in various chapels and had a connection to the Poldark
Tin Mine and Cornish Heritage Collection to which she presented the vintage photo-
graphs of the marching banners from the Paynter’s Land End Methodist Chapel,
acquired when that chapel closed.

However, she still had time to serve in her church choir, read, sew, and
appreciate listening to music, weave on her loom and knit hats for premature
babies.
President Jo visited Stella in the last couple of years and enjoyed the won-
derful stories from her life and I can echo Jo’s words that “Stella was kindness personified
and always had a smile. Her fight towards gender equality and advocacy in women’s rights will be
remembered.”
It was a privilege and a joy to have Stella as a friend for over 50 years and I
will miss those cheery telephone calls, lovely cards and letters but will treasure the
good fortune that BPW UK had in choosing her to make a significant contribution to
our history.
