Remember, this was decades before WFH, hybrid working or Zoom had been
invented. But at the time, German YCW were organising informal weekends on im-
age and public speaking; the Mexican YCW committee had set up a Rape Crisis Cen-
tre and Swiss YCW offered apprenticeships to student opticians from Russia. In
workshops at that Conference, YCW members from Eastern Europe had expressed a
need for technological and vocational training, so their BPW colleagues in Western
Europe immediately responded with work experience offers.

In 2023, there is now a Whatsapp group for Young BPWs worldwide. This is a
useful way to tap into the global network via posts about online events and offers of
requests for support for Young BPW in another country.

The Whatsapp group is also a good place to start if you are travelling to anoth-
er country and want to meet up with a BPW sister or even stay with them.

Globally, the current Young BPW International Representative is Tomi Odunsi
Fadina (BPW Nigeria & Brazil). Yasmin adds that Tomi is very approachable, having
worked with her on a small social media project to compile views from Young BPWs
on how they were breaking the bias in their industries.

Today, in addition to a special programme at BPW International Congress and
regional gatherings, Young BPW Symposia are held in each region every 3 years
and all Young BPW members can attend. This year in Asia-Pacific, Taiwan was the
host nation with the theme “Women in leadership: Thriving In A Post-Pandemic
World” and Young BPW Europe chose Brussels for their Symposium. These events
still provide excellent opportunities to volunteer or present and are excellent for
building professional networks and nurturing self-confidence.

So after 30 years, I know Young BPW is as relevant today as ever, and social
media/mobile communications mean that the potential for global access to the
knowledge, passion and support of BPW is unlimited.
