I will leave the last word to Irene M Santiago, Executive Director of the NGO Forum on Women,
1995 (i.e. the Forum which took place in Huairou), the slogan for which was “Looking at the
World through Women’s Eyes” which brings Beijing into the 21 Century with a small note of
st
hope:
And what do women’s eyes see? Apart from the people in anguish and despair borne of uncertainty over our
seeming incapacity to thwart the Corona virus, lives lost, jobs gone, school time lost, cracks in relationships, increase
in domestic violence, collapsed markets, stigma, hate speech, diversion of previous government resources to fighting
the virus, and on and on. But beyond these, women also see something else. Something people often say about
women: our resilience, our strength, our resourcefulness, and our capacity for multi-tasking and to take matters into
our own hands”.
