Back on earth, Siiri Tiivits Puttonen has been studying the ‘Great Pacific Garbage
Patch’. The movement of water around the World ends up in a vast area of discarded
waste materials, between Japan and the West coast of America, which swirls into a
vortex that breaks them down to microscopic particles that re-enter our systems
and pollute our lives in ways that are still being understood. More HERE
Jeanette Thornton, BPWNI, shared a useful link about an annual UK survey on waste
plastics: More HERE
The BPW Green Resolution was discussed. The Green BPW group is assured that the
BPWI board will return to these outstanding papers in six months. Vicky Mee, New
Zealand, understands the resolution will be heard in an online meeting for BPW In-
ternational as agreed at Congress in St Kitts, possibly in May. It will then be shared
with all federations as policy.
The group is now implementing the next goals of confirming the Green Ambassadors
for each country and the programme of training to take actions forward.
The next big event is the annual Earth Day on 22 April 2025. As BPWUK, we need
to reaffirm our individual and community pledges, along with photos.
Chris Nendick, VP Advocacy, is identifying the poor state of our rivers, waterways
and coasts.
The BPW UK conference organisers are negotiating the greenest possible event and
negotiating with the George Washington Hotel and currently, I am finding out the
lowest carbon footprint way of travelling from Newcastle Central Station to their lo-
cation with the refillable cup.
