Keynote Speech Friday at Conference
Disinformation in Election Year – Artificial Intelligence Angle
Our keynote speaker Angelika Sharygina, gave an amazing, albeit at times,
almost scary presentation at Friday’s Welcome Dinner, geared around AI potential both
good and bad, particularly where it pertains to an election year; how it can be used by
malicious actors having the power to create disinformation so easily. It can also be used in
areas of conflict. She tested our ability to spot areas of ‘fake news’, the difference
between misinformation, malinformation and disinformation. She showed several photos
and challenged us to decide if they were real or AI generated. Only one group (she’d
asked for opinions from each table) was able to discern correctly! So a very interesting,
albeit sobering presentation for sure.

combating misinformation and a PhD researcher addressing global issues internationally.
