4. Education & scholarships
In 1947, CFBPW adopted the Philippine Scholarship, awarding this
scholarship to women college students to come to California for gradu-
ate study at our universities. This scholarship was in existence from
1947 to 1972, at which time it was terminated. In 1950 the California
Memorial Scholarship was established. Either grants or loans are made
to assist women in furthering their training and education. In 1987, arti-
cles of incorporation were adopted, and the fund was renamed Califor-
nia BPW Education Fund, Inc. It is a loan program that can become a
grant to awardees.
5. Equal Rights Amendment
In 1937, “the first national organization to support the ERA was the Na-
tional Federation of Business and Professional Women. In 1972, the
California Legislature responded to CFBPW’s efforts and ratified the
Federal Equal Rights Amendment. During the late 1970s BPW-USA
contributed $250,000 to the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.
CFBPW supports eliminating the deadline on ratification of the ERA and
has written support messages to members of Congress to do this.
