Katherine Ann Power was finally free. Free from prison. Free from the nightmare that began when her brother, Frances “Gary” Powers was shot down over the Soviet Union on a U-2 reconnaissance mission in 1960. When the story made headlines, Power somehow became Powers but nobody, including Gary, ever bothered to correct the spelling.
Power confessed to violating Soviet airspace and was sentenced to 10 years in one of the Soviet Union's infamous gulags. He was released in a prisoner exchange two years later but by then, the CIA had already sucked Katherine and her lover, William "Lefty" Gilday Jr., into a plot to eliminate Walter Schroeder Sr., a Soviet spy who had eluded its grasp for more than a decade.
Katherine and Gary were closer than most siblings. When their father was stationed in Germany in the early 1950s,
