Hannes Meyer in uenced the modern Bauhaus movement and teaching of
architecture during his brief period as director 1928-1930 and in particular. I will
research evidence arguing his in uence on the social functioning of architecture
i.e. of teaching about modernism in building design, where there are no
distinctions between monumental and decorative art and where designers rid
themselves of professional limitations to meet the needs of the time. The review
essay will further explore themes of functional and constructive expression, as
understood by Meyer and colleagues at the time, his proletarian and Marxist
ideals, the resulting strife with existing Bauhaus ideals of functionalism and
bourgeoise forces. Lastly, it will look at evidence of both his demise as director
as a political move and his lasting in uence on the Bauhaus movement and on
modern architecture and manufacturing design.
