Thesis Abstract
My thesis will examine the tactics and methods in advertisements which objectify people, mainly throughout the 1960’s to
1990’s in media. However, other time periods in history will also be looked over regarding the aforementioned and following
themes. This objectification began as a marketing technique in order to create advertisements that would seem to be more
effective in capture people’s attention, by channelling their natural biological values. These values being ingrained within the
human body and mind, to automatically give a response to seeing an attractive individual on screen. However, this manner
often resulted in the misrepresentation of people, and a plethora of stereotypes being created. Though this misrepresentation
can happen to anyone, women became the main victims.
My thesis will be divided into three main themes: the first, Semantics, Visual Communication and Semiotics of said
advertisements, Women in Culture and Society being the second, and the Gendering of Products on the Market being the
third. Each of these themes will tie into each other and certain aspects of each will be shared amongst headings.
The aforementioned themes will be analysed and broken down, and also be supported by academic articles using the Harvard
referencing system. Further themes, not yet decided, are to be explored also. The keywords throughout this literature review will
be objectification, semantics, advertisements, and gendering.
Design Philisophy
I believe that good designs are like dreams. They are occasionally wacky, often interesting, but always completely original.
