   ....writing from Maun

PANCRATIUMS - Thanks to Nick Langton
A sure sign that the summer rains have arrived here in Maun, is the
emergence of Pancratium lilies. They pop up out of the ‘gasping’ sand-
veld after the first soaking rain, virtually overnight, and with the most
beautiful and delicate white flowers, only to die off by the next day.
Last year when on holiday in Western crete in October, we decided
to go down to a pretty beach called ‘Marathi’, and to our utter
amazement what should we see but Pancratiums growing in the
                           sand next to the sea!
On looking it up on the web, sure enough, they do grow all along the
rim of the Mediterranean sea. Not the identical species to ours, but very
similar, and the Casuarina trees there were loaded with Cicada beetles all
buzzing away with an ear-shattering crescendo, just like they do here in the Mopane veld near
Maun at Christmas time. by Nick Langton pg29
