-In 1984, the federal “Voting Accessibility for the Elderly and Handicapped Act” required polling
locations to be accessible to people with disabilities.

-In 1993, the “Motor Voter” law went into effect. This law required states to allow citizens to
register to vote when they applied for their drivers license. This law tends to adversely affect a
lot of college students. As they renew their licenses back in their hometown, their voting location
reverts back to their hometown. When students return to the cities of their respective college
campuses, they have to re-register to vote.

-The 2000s found a spotlight shining on the need for election reform. Congress passed the “Help
America Vote Act,” streamlining election procedures across the nation in 2002. In 2010, the
“State Infrastructure Fund” was created to expand the list of funders to invest in advancing voting
rights and expanding voting among historically underrepresented communities.
