On Sunday, November 12, 2023, members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated
® Epsilon Gamma Omega Chapter hosted a “Meet Our Black Elected Officials” community forum via
Zoom. Nine Huntsville-Madison County (Alabama) community officials were invited to participate with
seven accepting the invitation. The elected officials in attendance were: State Representative (District 53)
Anthony Daniels; State Representative (District 19) Laura Hall; Madison County Commissioner (District
           6) Violet Edwards; Huntsville City Council Member Devyn Keith; Huntsville City Schools Board Mem-
ber Michelle Watkins; Huntsville City Schools Board Member Carlos Matthews; and Madison City
           Schools Board Member Travis Cummings.

To open the session, Advocate for Social Justice Vice Chairman, Mrs. Alice Sams, welcomed the at-
tendees and provided the occasion. Mrs. Anita Weathers offered a most appropriate meditation and pray-
er. Each elected official introduced themselves to the more than 100 attendees representing various organ-
izations and discussed their community uplift and improvement plans. The two-hour forum increased un-
derstanding of the challenges elected officials face, raised awareness of the importance of voting, and en-
ergized attendees to drive change for the greater good of the community.

Ms. Lorraine Lacy, forum moderator, issued a call to action to the attendees by challenging them to heed
the concerns of the elected officials and join forces to find ways to assist them in their endeavors. Chapter
President, Mrs. Tonya S. Wood, recapped the session and offered closing remarks informing the attendees
that the chapter will schedule similar sessions in the future.
