However, things were changing – but not for the better. At some point
in 1964, Moore noticed a sore on the back of his neck that was
becoming a concern. He eventually got it checked and the diagnosis
was cancer. He went through the most advanced treatment for cancer
available in 1964 and the reaction was positive – but it was also
physically, as well as psychologically draining. Moore took the process
in a positive stride as he did most everything in life and continued
through each day with an encouraging outlook and determination to
succeed as he had 1964.
At 6ft, and a solid frame – Moore was
an imposing figure; however, his
generosity, smile and congeniality
made him one of the most well-liked
players on tour. Moore had also
established himself as a valid
competitor. He was among the
original folks to be a member when
the Professional Putters Association
(PPA) started and was called the
Professional Putt-Putt Golfers
Association (PPPGA). He was also
directly involved with the building of
Putt-Putt Golf courses, as well as managing them. Putt-Putt provided
him the opportunity in 1959 to be a co-owner of a course in New York,
he helped build and manage the course in Long Island. However, in
1961 he would return to his beloved Augusta, GA to build and manage
his own Putt-Putt Course, as well as operate his Nationwide Insurance
Agency.
The treatment for the cancer seemed to work. One of Moore’s close
friends, Jim Bates, remembers talking with him and learning of how the
