Chapter 20
Henri
I
am not surprised to find everyone downstairs waiting for us. Their curiosity
is obvious. I am the new guy who brings out a side of Sanya they hadn’t seen
in years. Some, probably never. Plus, we’d slept through breakfast and almost
missed the 11 AM departure.
The disappointment on Teo’s face indicates he’d expected us to look
exhausted and hung over. He is not expecting us to look fresh and happy. That’s
exactly how we look to the outsider. I’d slung her beach bag over on my shoulder
and by the time we make it outside, we are laughing, holding hands, and debating
about using the word parasol or umbrella.
I think umbrella is the ugliest word known to man, and she thinks parasol
sounds extra feminine.
Most of the women are assessing us, and the guys are sending subliminal chest
bumps. I do not quite understand the reason behind the unspoken praise until we
are seated on the bus. Sanya yawns and stretches like a cat.
“I’m so tired,” she tells me. “I’m going to take THE BEST nap on the beach.
And, I’m not even sore because you’re the best. What a night.”
A few random chuckles ignite. I even hear an “I fucking knew it.” I try to
ignore it, but, to no avail. Someone gives me a congratulatory pat on my shoulder.
I know Sanya is talking about dancing, but the group thinks I’ve fucked her brains
out all night and this morning. I wish this is the case, but who am I to correct them?
“You’re too kind.” I dismiss.
