Nursing care for high alert medication
1- Do not use a peripheral vein (risk of extravasation)
2- Give via a central vein via accurate infusion pump
3- Continuous haemodynamic monitoring
4- Do not connect to CVP lumen used for monitoring central venous pressure
5- Assess urine output carefully
6- Assess blood glucose level
7- Don't discontinue drug abruptly.
8- Recheck every 5 minutes for duration of infusion.
9- Maintain continuous ECG monitoring and blood pressure monitoring.
10- Be aware that headache may signal extreme hypertension and overdose
11- Monitor infusion site for extravasation.
12- Peripheral vascular insufficiency (decreased Watch for signs and symptoms
of peripheral vascular insufficiency (decreased capillary refill, pale to
cyanotic to black skin color).
13- Never leave patient unattended during infusion.
14- Use coloured sticker for labels of drug data
