Yellow as the Sun, Green as the Grass, Orange as the Foundation on My Skin Goda Mickeviciute I still remember when you held me crying When I was scared of tornado sirens, Or whenever these knees scraped from friction, Feeling as if my wounds were doused in citron. I still remember the way you braided hair, Tightly wrapped so my head would go sore. Different colored wraps and bands. These were the days when I could barely add. I still remember birthdays with wild daisies And days when dad planted lemon seeds Into our pots of plants, While it still grew in its unfavorable circumstance. So even though we’re older and days together are less common, Just know, I’ve never forgotten, Being sick and eating your freshly peeled oranges, Citron memories will forever be my origin. 23
