DINNER PARTY
Amanda Hoeksema
One table with too many tongues and not enough ears.
Crinkling lips bleating blankly.
Ceilings too high,
walls too thin, caving in, breaking in to
their stampede of voices.
My wringing, clammy hands pressing deeper and deeper into my thighs.
Give opinions in silence.
Watch their words spiral up to the ceiling spinning and expanding,
a tornado of “I”s, of nonsense, of nonsense. Close the door to the bathroom.
Run the faucet till the water boils.
