Listening involves quieting the mind and asking God to provide us with the inner peace to listen and hear what other people have to say. Sometimes, we become so caught up in our own brain chatter that we forget to allow other ideas to flow in our direction. In our new “AC” environ- ment, when we are not all together in one room or office, we have the chance to change how we interact. By respect- fully listening to others and honoring different opinions, we will help ourselves to grow, learn, and contribute more readily.
Observing allows us to consciously see and take in what our co-workers are doing and how they project and actual- ize their intentions. When we observe, we are also quieting our minds with intense focus on how others process and respond to suggestions. We must practice complimenting one another without making sarcastic remarks or off-color jokes. If we have an opportunity to correct someone for a mistake or wrongdoing, we must be mindful of each per- son’s feelings in a creative, respectful manner, instead of belittling and degrading others. Selfish practices were the norm in the “BC” era, but definitely not “AC.”
Voicing our opinions means taking the initiative to ex- press an idea or innovation, knowing that others may not agree. It is OK if our ideas are rejected, as long as we voice them with respect for others and graciously accept criti- cism. Everyone is entitled to their own perspectives. When we voice our opinions, we give without fear and receive with appreciation.
Empowering others means giving our co-workers and others around us the freedom to express their thoughts and opinions without the burden of harsh judgments and commentaries. When we allow others to voice their truths, free of negativity—even if we disagree— we open an arena of creative possibilities.
