The plastics industry would benefit from adopting and standardizing the use
of CIE2000 for color tolerancing. In today’s competitive market, there is little
room for waste — whether it is time or resources — and that is ultimately all that
antiquated color formulas like CIE 1976 DE* can contribute.
The above is an excerpt from an article authored by Earl Balthazar, Senior
Applications Engineer at Datacolor, that was published January 4, 2021 by
Plastics Today. You can read the complete article here: “It’s Past Time to
Standardize Color Tolerances for Plastics.”
CADNEWS® Spring 2021 Color Notes – Scott Heitzman
Welcome to the first addition of CADNEWS® Color Notes. Intended to create
discussion and provide comments regarding questions you may have related
to color and appearance, color measurements, and colorants. Do not miss your
opportunity to anonymously ask an expert a question related to the coloring of
plastics. Use the link below to submit your questions. Our SPECAD Color Notes
committee will provide a response to one or more of the submissions in the up-
coming CADNEWS® letter.

Q – Are there standardized methods to visually assess color?
A – Our education committee reports: Yes, a good start is to review the many
reference materials available to help train, design experiments as well as to in-
clude consideration of gloss, transparency and metamerism. The following ASTM
standards are the place to start.
Establishing Visual Assessment
ASTM E1499-16 -Standard Guide for Selection, Evaluation, and Training of Observ-
ers
ASTM E1808-96 (2015) - Standard Guide for Designing and Conducting Visual
Experiments -
Guide that can be used to identify techniques that will contribute to visual ob-
servations that can be correlated with objective instrumental measurements of
appearance attributes of material. It provides guidelines to identify viewing con-
ditions and analysis to achieve reliable visual data.
