Heard; Henry County DUI/Drug Court Coordinator, Lisa King; Jessica Rocker, National Solutions Manager
for Smart Start; Henry County State Court Judge, David Brown.
DDS Deputy General Council Crandall Heard participated in a panel discussion titled “Alternative Sanctions to
Incarceration for Alcohol-Related Offenses” at the recent American Probation and Parole Association Winter Confer-
ence. The group discussed the processes that put people in jail and ways to destigmatize the process of reentry.
A few facts regarding incarceration and/or Accountability Courts:
- A DUI Court graduate is four times less likely to have another DUI in three years.
-The cost savings for a person in DUI court versus jail is $19,802.00 per year, per participant.
-Incarceration can diminish economic wellbeing—among both the incarcerated and their romantic part
ners—and, therefore, increase relationship dissolution. Incarcerated men have few opportunities to earn
income and, after release their criminal record makes it difficult to find employment. Women attached to
incarcerated men may also have increased parenting and household responsibilities that force them to
leave the paid labor force, and thus impede their ability to maintain the family’s economic standard of
living.
