Fun stuff- terrariums
A terrarium is like an aquarium, but for plants instead of
fish. All you need is a glass container, even an old kettle like
in the picture below. Then choose the plants suited for your
container.
An open container is best for succulents and cacti. They like lots of air, with low
humidity like we have here in Botswana. A closed container (with a lid) might be
best for ferns, bromeliads and most carnivorous plants that prefer humid con-
ditions. The plants draw moisture from the soil and evaporate it through their
leaves, in a process known as transpiration, the water condenses on the glass and
drips down the sides of the container, returning to the soil, mimicking nature.
Use a potting medium that best fits the kinds of plants you will be placing inside,
so if you are going for succulents and cacti use coarse sand as seen below. If you
can get activated charcoal, add a little to your medium to filter the water and help
prevent growth of fungi. Then add a little bit of water, or a bit more, depending
on what plants you will be using, some driftwood or pretty stones and there you
have your very own terrarium. Text: by S C (Photos: Pixabay (left) & SC (right))
