Creating a Scented Garden
Fragrance fascinates us, it has played a significant role in spiritual
and cultural traditions for thousands of years. We use scents in
healing practices, aromatherapy and beauty regimens just as we use
spicy, herby, woody and floral aromas to create the magic in a garden
as scent is an invisible but vital part - the very essence of it in fact.
For herby scents, add in plants like Basil, Rosemary and Lavender; and if you’re a
fan of licorice then Fennel too. Next you will need some Spring bulbs like
Hyacinth, Narcissus and Freesias which transform the garden with their heady
scents. Bedding plants like Dianthus, Salvias, Impatiens and Petunias give out a
subtle and pretty perfume. Plants with very pungent and easily recognizable scents
should be added carefully as they can overpower others, like the Ginger bush
(Tetradenia riparia), Lemongrass, and ‘rose’ or ‘lemon-scented’ Pelargoniums.
