ECO HUB - Book on Indigenous Plants
This book started around 2010 when I moved onto a plot in
Matebeleng, Botswana. The plant life that I saw fascinated me, and
every year I kept finding new species hidden away, or ones that only came out after good
rains. At the time I was just interested in photographing and cataloguing all the species for
my own interest, but bit by
bit I filled my computer
with photographs until I
felt that actually having
a catalogue reference
could be quite useful.
Everyone has their
quirks and mine has
been a bit of an
obsession with plants.
I blame it all on my
mother, who I think was
a little obsessed herself.
She made a tree walk on
our farm in Zimbabwe,
and full circle, here I am
doing more or less the
same thing in Botswana.
I have included trees,
grasses, sedges,
succulents and as many
herbaceous plants as I
could find to
photograph. There are
basic details: the plant’s
name and identifying
characteristics and where
the photograph was taken. I find knowing a plant’s name opens up a wealth of information,
because then you can search for its uses; whether it’s medicinal etc. and how to grow it; or
how rare or endangered it is. S.C
