With the photos you recently took, at a local pri- vate show, you mentioned that you try to capture the spirit or vibe of live performances. I’d like to think you did with this show! How did you manage to find it? Is it pre-planned or in the moment?
For this specific show it was not planned, only because I was not familiar with where they were playing. Having shot previously at or knowing the venue plays a role in shooting live music since I know where I can get the best photos.
That show was small and private, do you prefer shooting smaller shows or large concerts and why?
I really enjoy both but I would choose larger con- certs. I like a challenge and there’s always a lot more going on. I can work more with a larger space, as distance and lighting are typically better in com- parison to the smaller venues.
I find it very amazing how you manage to make a picture express sound in a still frame. How do you do that or is it a trade secret?
It’s not much a secret but it helps to have knowl- edge on the type of music or having seen the artist perform prior. Although, I have captured some crazy shots just based out of pure luck and timing.
What are the names of the bands you shot for this event?
Not Spices was the first band, followed by Mr. Do It and the Downtown Boyz. The photos speak for themselves, they were fun to shoot.
Almost done! For beginners out there who may be reading this, what would you say is your biggest pointer?
Never doubt yourself and create your own artistic style. I use to view other photographers photos, comparing mine and feeling as if my photos would never be good enough. Becoming friends with other photographers over the years taught me everyone shoots and visualizes differently.
