It also states that you have an EP about to release and you use words like “authentic” and “naked” to describe it. Can you give the viewers a little more on what it’s about?
Absolutely. Being a 22-year-old still on the journey of discovering my purpose, I started my music career initially feeling extremely lost. My first mistake was trying
to figure out the crowd I wanted to please and appeal to and who was going to judge me for the topics I wanted to sing about. I was going through an identity crisis. Being one of the only bi- racial girls in my hometown, I stuck out like a sore thumb. I grew up constantly being ridiculed
and judged for my ethnicity to the point where I became numb to the insults. On the other end, I
was considered “white-washed” and a “wanna be white girl”
to certain people in the black community which deterred me from wanting to learn more about black culture. It wasn’t until the end of high school and as I entered college, that I started
to appreciate parts of me I used to intentionally try to hide. For example, my big curly hair and taste in music. I’m saying all of this to say that after a long time of self-discovery, I now feel that I’m closer to my dreams because I feel I have accepted myself. My most authentic sense of self is finally allowing me to create an EP that is so pure, authentic, and naked.
Ok two fun questions now! Outside of other musicians what experiences, events, and/
or people do you get your influences from?
My parents have had a huge impact and influence on the way I handle situations with care and treat others with kindness, no matter the circumstances.
If you could give your music/ sound a color what would it be and why?
Burnt orange, because it’s vibrant, yet subtle and warm.
Lastly, where can we find your music? How can we follow you?
You can find my music on YouTube, Apple Music, Soundcloud, and Instagram if you search my name: Erykah Officer.
