My mother. She would always tell me that 3 years before I was born, she saw that I should be named Michael-David. Named after the archangel “Michael” and “King David,” strong musicians in scripture. She said she had a vision that this was what I was going to be (although I doubted her for years). God eventually showed me that her dream was real.
A significant music influence has to be Quincy Jones because when you think of a producer who has top- tier musicianship while being a producer, you think of Quincy. That’s what I want to be as a producer!
Timberland is another huge influence for me because he stretches the bar for his production every time! He doesn’t stop, he doesn’t settle, he doesn’t ride the wave: he creates them! He made his own sound and his own path. On top of that, he developed artists like Justin Timberlake, Missy Elliot, Tink, and more! His futuristic sound helped me manifest what I want my music to sound and feel like, sonically!
If you could get any artist in the studio who would it be and why?
The list is very long with artists that I would pick,
man...if I had to pick one, the first that comes to mind
is Anderson.Paak or Smino. These two artists are sonically daring and extremely creative. They do what makes them feel happy at their fullest capacity, and it translates all over their music. I need that kind of energy around me at all times! We could elevate each other!
With Covid-19 affecting everyone in different ways, How did this pandemic affect your industry?
It’s hard, really; before COVID, I was networking in person with people for future studio gigs, which has cut down the process tremendously. On top of that, many people have trouble paying for their investment in their craft due to a lack of funds, including myself.
On the bright side, I learned to re-evaluate my passion, take it up a notch, rebuild, and become more in tune with what I need to execute for Ja.Eri Production LLC
When you get into the musical “zone,” what helps you pull out the raw emotions needed to make a great beat?
My life experience helps me the most. I’ve been through a lot of bumps in the road. Things that I’m trying to work on to this day. For the most part, I know people will only retain so much info from what you say, but when you put it in your music... it’s like people can feel what’s going on in my head without truly knowing what’s going on. I shoot for people to feel my genuine, unspoken emotion through my beats/compositions. I can’t keep it balled up, and the thought of this makes me want to keep going.
Fun question! What color would you say your beats look like?
Cobalt Blue or Violet, for the most part, but it all depends on my mood.
What advice would you give beginners interested in music production?
Just do it, don’t think about it. Don’t stop because you haven’t made the best hit ever in your first go around. You’ll only get better!
