There was no Bible, just dirty old pieces of paper in it — I thought ‘How sad’ knowing as a boy in the late 1940’s a number of men from different churches who had been involved in getting the Council to agree to have a Bible there.
I decided to find out who had a key and see if I could look after the case. I’ve had the privilege of turning the pages twice a week ever since.
Over the years I’ve had some amazing opportunities to speak to many people about the Lord Jesus and the Bible, praying with many of them and giving them a Gideon New Testament.
I often go, not knowing what state the case would be in - pizza, kebab, chocolate and other things have been on the glass.
The lock has been super-glued. Also on two occasions super-glue had been put on the glass and a penny stuck in the middle.
One Saturday afternoon, while cleaning the glass, three young men in their early twenties came up and started to take the micky at what I was doing, they were a bit merry, having just come from the pub across the road.
Eventually they walked away, and as they did a tall young man came up to me and wanted to shake my hand. “Thank you for this Bible” he said “I read it every morning”. Then he turned and went on his way. I believe he was an Angel, sent just to encourage me to keep turning the pages so that others can be blessed by it.
And by God’s grace I will.
