How many of you still use one of these?
There are some hilarious videos of
teenagers trying to work out how
to use one of these kinds of
phones. They’re not even sure
where to speak into. And yet for
many of us over a certain age,
these kinds of phones seem simple to use, and perhaps bring back a real sense of nostalgia.
I remember seeing a clip of the sitcom ‘The Good Life’ where Tom Good is wandering around outside their house with their phone in his hand. Something had happened to it; maybe he’d
cut the wire on one of his DIY escapades. And Barbara, his wife, says something about how great it would be to walk around with the phone. He answers her back with the kind of retort that made Henry Ford famous for not being able to predict the future.
And now many of us are doing just what Barbara wondered about. We have phones that look more like a handheld screen, and we can use it wherever we like. Little by little we’ve worked out how to call friends, and make video calls, perhaps even browse the internet and do some shopping, all via a powerful computer, that 50 years ago would have taken up your whole front room!
