P. 5
5. The Buried Grain
“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” John 12:24
Coming to the kernel of it all,
with earthen words Christ will explain that this hour at which he must fall
is harvest-sure of life to come,
of hope
with the grain.
Look amongst your cereals for a single oat grain or puffed wheat. Though this only represents the seed, look at it and consider the potential for life that a single grain has. Imagine that only a handful of grain is all you have left. You could eat that grain, or you could bury it and wait for the harvest it will bring.
What little do you have that needs to be invested in order to bear fruit? What does this teach you about what Jesus did through His death?
Special word: Hope
Other Bible Passages: Psalm 126: 5-6 Those who walk the fields to sow, casting their seed in tears, will one day tread those same long rows, amazed by what’s appeared. (The Voice Version)
6. Peter
“Peter said to him, ‘Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.’” John 13:37
Cocksure, Peter crows
that unlike this brood he will stay, will go as far as blood;
but Christ speaks a denied dawn, withheld light which will wring the breath out of such words.
Hold out your own hand. Maybe it has scars, signs of injury; maybe you remember the wrong you did with it, as well as the good you did. Consider the things your hand can do, like picking up a single seed, or crafting something - or maybe those things have become difficult because of arthritis but the mechanics of your hands means that you could do them once.
So much potential for both good and bad, and isn't that what makes us as human as Peter? So don't we need Jesus just as much?
Special word: Human
Other Bible passages: Romans 3: 23-24
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. 24 They are set right as a gift of His grace, through the redemption that is in Messiah Yeshua. (Tree of Life Version)
