the new valve-horn – this is truly a work that demands to be heard live
in concert. Dave Lee has been principal horn with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Michael Nyman Band.
Mozart’s The Magic Flute has been called the Masonic Opera, due to its symbolism and the fact that both the composer and the librettist were Masons. The overture was finished only a few
days before the premiere of the opera and is a succinct, energetic masterpiece.
British composer Peter Warlock’s Capriol Suite is a set of dances composed in 1926 – based on French Renaissance dances – and is considered one of his more popular works.
Albert Roussel was a naval officer and composer from Normandy. His neo-classical Sinfonietta for Strings was commissioned in 1934 by violinist Jane Evrard for her (all-female) string orchestra.
Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 is one of the best-known compositions of classical music, particularly the famous opening five bar theme (the Fate Motif). A true journey from darkness to light, with a finale heralding the first appearance of trombones in a symphony as the work powers into its uplifting conclusion.
