The work was written for the trio – Harriet MacKenzie (violin),
Meg Hamilton (viola) and Milos Milivojevic (accordion) – and was first performed in Chichester Cathedral in 2018 with WSO. Venezuelan dances and liturgical chants make it a true celebration of diversity.
Hubert Parry’s Lady Radnor’s Suite portrays the life of Helen, Countess Radnor – wife of the
Fifth Earl of Longford Castle and a close personal friend of Parry’s. She was extraordinary and did things that were not viewed as acceptable for a Victorian lady, such as commissioning Parry to write this piece for her so that she could conduct its first public performance in St. James Hall in 1894.
Touch Her Soft Lips and Part was originally part of Walton’s film score to Henry V – starring Laurence Olivier–andcomposedin1943. WelshcomposerGraceWilliams’SeaSketcheswascomposedin1944 when she was living in London, though it reflects her love of her hometown of Barry, South Wales.
Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla wrote Libertango in Milan in 1974. Its spicy rhythm and fiendish melody have kept it at the forefront of modern Tango. Igor Shamo is a Ukrainian composer who studied in Russia and wrote his Accordion Concerto in 1981. It is a flowing, fascinating and approachable work.
