 CYFLEOEDD CYNHWYSOL / INCLUSIVE OPPORTUNITIES
“If people have had a negative experience of sport, physical activity or even PE it can create lasting memories and be difficult for them to re-engage in any type of activity even if they know it’s good for them so it’s important we can provide as many entry level opportunities as we can, especially ones that can cater for the varying needs of people.
A key objective of these events is to turn a one off visit into regular activity. It’s also really important that those regular opportunities provide a meaningful experience so in line with Ffit Conwy’s new Activity Inclusion Model we have split the event into two parts which enables us to advertise more effectively and hopefully increase the likelihood that those who do attend clubs will keep attending so that they can access all the health and wellbeing opportunities on offer.”
The first ‘Mixed Ability & Specific’ event was then followed by the ‘Open & Adapted’ insport series on Friday, 1st March, at the James Alexander Barr Tennis Centre.
This event was tailored towards physically impaired and/or sensory impaired individuals with the activities reflective of the needs of those impairment groups. The Conwy Free- wheelers were again on hand to provide adapted cycling however through the use of tandem bikes, hand-cycles and other specialised kit they were able to engage with more participants who face different challenges when cycling. Similarly, the Conwy Castles ran another boccia session but again they were able to adapt the game to suit the needs of those attending. These clubs were joined by Conwy Disabled Archery, Llysfaen Petanque Club, Conwy Thunder Wheelchair Basketball Club and Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby’s Welsh Development Officer who all provided an opportunity to engage with their sports which proved to be very popular with those who attended.
A huge thank you to all of the activity providers who help make these events possible. There are some superb inclusive activity opportunities within Conwy and lots of these are only possible due to the fantastic volunteers who selflessly offer their knowledge and experience to help others.
