“They’ve also been on a coaching course beforehand funded by the Urdd, so they’re getting the practical side as well as the theory side. Many of the students have got experience of playing football, but not so much of refereeing, so it’s a valuable experience for them. It’s great to promote the Welsh language as well, working with such a prominent organisation as the Urdd.”
Gwion John Williams, Urdd Gobaith Cymru’s senior
sports development officer for North and Mid Wales,
said: “There are over 30 teams taking part and almost
400 children here for a day full of football, and all
through the medium of Welsh. We’re very proud to
host the tournament annually across all regions, and
we’re looking forward to seeing the winners go to the
national finals at Caeau Blaendolau in Aberystwyth
in May next year.”

RYGBI / RUGBY
NEL METCALFE EARNS SECOND WALES CAP
18 year old Nel from Llanrhychwyn near Trefriw in Dyffryn Conwy earned herself a place in the Wales Women’s Rugby squad for the Global Tier 1 WXV tournament in New Zealand.
Nel won her first cap close to home, playing full-back against the USA Women’s Team at Stadiwm CSM in Eirias in a test match on 30th September. The Welsh team won 38 – 18.
In only her second game for Wales, Nel was selected to start against one of the best Women’s Rugby teams in the world – host nation of Global Tier 1 WXV and reigning World Champions. Coach Ioan Cunningham said that ‘excellent’ Nel had ‘fully deserved her place’ in the team.
Nel started playing rugby at Clwb Rygbi Nant Conwy junior section whilst in primary school, then from the age of 13 played for Ceirw Nant, the Girls Rugby Hub based at Nant Conwy. Progressing to play for Rygbi Gogledd Cymru Under 18s, Nel was spotted by National Coaches. She has also played for Hartpury College whilst studying her Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Rugby).
Nel will certainly be one to watch, and her friends and former teammates at Nant Conwy will be supporting her all the way.
