PADLFYRDDIO / PADDLE BOARDING
STAND UP PADDLEBOARDING IS ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING SPORTS GLOBALLY
Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) is well documented for both its physical and mental health benefits along with its ability to improve individuals’ connection to their natural spaces.
SUP taster, Board & Breathe and SUP Yoga sessions were held throughout September to offer women an introduction to Paddle- boarding in a relaxed environment on a local lake. Sessions offered women a ‘taste’ while increasing confidence on and around the water. All equipment was provided and costs were kept low.
Following feedback from participants, a 4-week improvers course will be offered to provide further opportunities to access SUP and increase skills and confidence over autumn/winter. These initial pilot sessions were ‘women only’ to target and increase women's participation and engagement in physical activity.
Specific SUPs, wetsuits and buoyancy aids were purchased for the sessions which were led and supported by female staff exclusively which was appreciated by those who took part:
SUP taster attendees:
“Having it ALL female - both instructors and participants made it a totally safe space. So I think we all felt able to express our vulnerabilities, concerns and fears. I preferred it to be all female.”
“I felt more relaxed and calm being taught by women alongside other women in the class. I may not have attended if it was a mixed session. I felt only positive vibes during the session.”
Katie Owen, Ffit Conwy Leisure Development:
“It was evident all the attendees signed up to the sessions for various reasons including stress relief, to try a new sport, improve confidence, learn how to self rescue, gain technique and face fear of water. Participants said they wanted more sessions and some also expressed an interest in regular social paddle meets but that there were currently no local clubs/groups to suit their needs.”

SUP Yoga and Board & Breathe sessions were delivered by a qualified Yoga instructor and enhanced the SUP offer. These sessions encouraged SUP taster attendees to return for another session on the water and also encouraged ladies that had never experienced SUP before to attend and gain greater confidence on their board. Board & Breathe sessions in particular helped attendees build a greater connection to their natural surroundings by taking the time to explore the 5 ways to wellbeing.
