Selling my 1986 944
Turbo a few years
ago was a dif cult
decision and one that I
would soon regret. The
combination of near
perfect balance, great
power and timeless looks always kept a spe- cial place. So the search began for the ’86 replacement which, mind you, was going to be no small feat. I had spent several years tweaking the 951 into a very nice car, but as with many cars in my life, as soon as the project is complete there is another car which catches my eye.
During my search I found a 1989 951 which seemed “ok” at rst glance; however I had al- ready made a failed attempt into Illinois and didn’t know if this 951 would be any differ- ent. I nally decided to contact the seller and had a really good conversation about his car.
The next weekend my son Nick and I de- cided to, once again, borrow Ric Smith’s Featherlite trailer and off to downtown Chi- cago we go. After a few hours of negotiating, the ’89 was on the trailer and heading south to its new home. I stay in touch with the pre- vious owner and always send him pictures of my next tasteful change. The cars are all fun, but as Jeremy Clarkson will tell you, the great cars have soul, they speak to you. This ’89 speaks to me every time I get behind the wheel and has soul in volumes.
